NM: Governor hopeful for early reading proposal

Education Week: SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Republican Gov. Susana Martinez remains optimistic that lawmakers will approve a centerpiece of her school improvement plan before time runs out in the legislative session this week.

Pending in the House is a proposal that will require school districts to hold back third-graders who can't read proficiently, rather than promoting them to the next class. The Senate already has approved a nearly identical measure, but the House postponed debate that had been expected on Tuesday.
