Haunted by burning buses, South Carolina school leaders make a push for replacements

The Post and Courier: At the end of last school year in Spartanburg District 5, Superintendent Scott Turner held a special recognition ceremony that he never could have imagined: handing out awards to high school freshmen for bravery during a school bus fire.

Twelve students received the Superintendent Citizenship Award for alerting the driver that smoke was rising from the back of their 22-year-old state-owned bus on the morning of May 8, and for helping younger students get off safely. The driver, Teresa Stroble, was lauded as a town hero.

"If they had not alerted her when they did, it would have been a tragic outcome," Turner said. Investigators determined that a faulty heater caused the fire.
