Louisiana House advances sales tax bill on second attempt; dramatic showdown erupts over budget

The Advocate: The Louisiana Legislature hit a dramatic mid-way point of the second special session of the year on Monday.

The House, after multiple unsuccessful attempts this year, agreed to advance revenue-raising bills meant to soften the "fiscal cliff" the state faces when temporary tax measures expire June 30. The 76-26 vote in favor of keeping one-third of an expiring sales tax hike to generate $370 million was particularly seen as significant movement, as the last special session collapsed after the chamber repeatedly rejected a similar proposal.
