FBI Director Comey and OPM Acting Director Cobert to Headline Aug. 30 Government Symposium

i360Gov: Cyber attackers are getting smarter and more focused. The 2016 Symantec Government Symposium – taking place later this month in Washington, D.C. – aims to fight this challenge head-on.

“Last year, 430 new malware variants were discovered and more than half a billion personal information records were lost to breach,” said Rob Potter, vice president, Americas, Symantec. “Cyber attackers are unrelenting. Our annual Government Symposium event aims to spur important dialogue across the public and private sectors on how to address critical cyber challenges.”

The Symposium will take place on Tuesday, August 30 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, convening more than 1,000 attendees from government and industry.

FBI Director James Comey and OPM Acting Director Beth Cobert will deliver the keynote addresses, while the TECH Talks plenary session will feature engaging presentations from the United Nations’ Jane Holl Lute and the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Nuala O’Connor.

“This year’s theme is ‘Actionable Intelligence: Stay Smart. Stay Secure.’ Government agencies are investing significant resources into developing and upgrading their cyber capabilities, and they are generating more security data that ever before. But the volume of that data can be overwhelming,” Potter said. “At the Symposium, we’ll examine how agencies can transform data into timely intelligence, so they can take action quickly, while still addressing privacy and other mandates.”

Leaders from the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and National Institute of Standards and Technology will speak in sessions examining issues at the forefront of government cyber security, as well as participate in the interactive TechXpo where attendees can explore cyber security solutions, programs, and simulations.
