The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said it was calling on companies to submit their interests for wind energy leases off the coast of New York.

BOEM said it was moving forward with plans to lease wind energy areas in a region about 11 nautical miles south off Long Beach, N.Y.

Walter Cruickshank, acting BOEM director, said in a statement the agency would decide whether or not to go ahead and describe the terms and conditions of the wind energy lease areas once it gets feedback from a state renewable energy task force and after it completes the necessary environmental reviews.

BOEM has awarded five commercial wind energy leases for the Atlantic coast within the last few years, though none of the planned wind farms is in service.

Renewable energy company Deepwater Wind in early May received a permit from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to start deployment of its Block Island wind farm slated for the state's waters.

Construction on the transmission system to feed power back to the mainland could begin later this year. Construction on the wind farm itself is slated for 2015.

In the coming year, BOEM said it plans to hold auctions for wind energy areas off the coast of Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

A new concept to improve power production performance of wind turbines in a wind farm
Beijing, China (SPX) May 27, 2014
Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources in the world today. Dr. Hui Hu and his group at Iowa State University studied the effects of the relative rotation directions of two tandem wind turbines on the power production performance, the flow characteristics in the turbine wake flows, and the resultant wind loads acting on the turbines. The experimental study was p ... read more
