D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray will sign into law Wednesday legislation that will raise the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 per hour by 2016.
The D.C. Council passed the legislation last year as part of a regional effort to combat poverty and increase wages.
Lawmakers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties adopted similar measures, although the two Maryland counties will increase their wages at a slightly slower pace — reaching $11.50 by 2017.
Mr. Gray in the past had expressed his support for an increase to $10 per hour.
The District’s first wage increase will take effect in July, when the minimum wage will increase to $9.50 per hour.
