Ransomware hits North Carolina water utility

Officials described the resultant data loss as “catastrophic.”

Ransomware has infected a water utility company in North Carolina, pushing its customer service offline and forcing a rebuild of its computing infrastructure.

The Jacksonville-based Onslow Water and Sewer Authority released a statement this week that the Ryuk ransomware virus hit its systems in the middle of the night on Saturday. Though water service has not been interrupted, officials described the data loss incurred as catastrophic.

ONWASA officials attributed the attack to cyber criminals who may be based in a foreign country.
