Watchdog: It’s illegal to add fees to credit and debit cards

Dallas News: Every month the apartment complex in The Colony where Adam Asmar lives charges him $45 to pay his rent with either a debit or credit card. That’s against the law.

State law says it’s illegal to charge a convenience fee, a processing fee, a surcharge or any extra fee when consumers pay with plastic. There’s one exception, though, and that’s government agencies, which can add a fee when you pay with plastic.
